Justin Merkow, MD

Dr. Justin Merkow, MD is an interventional pain physician and anesthesiologist dedicated to providing innovative, compassionate, and evidence-based care to his patients and their families. He is committed to providing individualized treatment and tailors his patients’ care to their unique experience and pain. He understands the challenges of suffering from chronic pain and utilizes a wide range of treatment options to provide the best care for each patient. 

Dr. Merkow went to medical school at the University of Colorado where he won the Owens-Swan Award for outstanding promise in surgery. He spent three years as a surgical resident and then went on to complete his Anesthesia residency at the University of Colorado, winning the “Outstanding Academic Achievement Award” as well as the “Katie Wood Award” for outstanding anesthesia resident, both awarded to only one resident per year. He was also elected chief anesthesia resident by his faculty and peers. Dr. Merkow left Colorado for one year to complete his interventional pain fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard University - one of the top pain fellowship programs in the country. 

He utilizes his training to offer specialized, innovative, and individualized care for his patients by providing wide-ranging interventional treatments from simple to advanced minimally invasive options, often using his expertise in ultrasound and x-ray guidance.  He treats headaches, neck pain, low back pain, sciatica, joint pain, neuropathic pain, and CRPS among other diagnoses.  Dr. Merkow emphasizes a multimodal medication approach as well as physical therapy and alternative treatment options to find the treatment that best fits his patients’ goals and values.  Dr. Merkow is proud to be part of the MD Pain team, which offers the most cutting-edge interventional treatments in Colorado. 

Dr. Merkow has published extensively and enjoys speaking at national conferences.  He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Spine Intervention Society, International Neuromodulation Society, the American Medical Association, and Colorado Pain Society. When not treating patients, Dr. Merkow enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, taking advantage of the beautiful Colorado outdoors and discovering new restaurants.
